It is always stressed the importance of seat belts in your drive alive campaigns. Most stress the importance for front end crashes or rollovers. We all seen the advertisements. And yes they are of vital importance in these incidents as I’ve witnessed in my 20 year career as a fire fighter. In a roll over or front end smash I’ve seen the results of wearing and not wearing seat belts. Believe me it not a pretty sight when a family member is ejected from a vehicle and the others who were wearing their seat belts escape with only cuts and bruises.
But how many are aware of the importance of your seat belt in a rear end crash?
The other day we attended to a MVC on the N2N near Umgababa on the south coast, and for the first time in my career the importance of a seat belt in a rear smash was evident. This incident resulted in the driver been ejected from his seat thru the reat windscreen of his car and into the front windscreen of the vehicle responsible for rear ending him. The result ended in him dying of his injuries, while his passenger who had her seat belt on suffered whip lash and bruising from the seat belt.
So my advise to all BUCKLE UP everytime you use your vehicle, even the short trips to the shop down the road.
